SEO

Meta, sitemaps, redirects and the SEO audit.

The unglamorous part that decides whether Google sends you anything. Most of it is done once and then left alone.

What happens without you

  • sitemap.xml is generated and regenerated as your catalog changes.
  • Clean URLs — readable slugs for products, categories and pages.
  • Automatic 301 redirects — rename a slug and the old URL redirects itself, so you keep the rankings you earned.
  • Structured markup — product data marked up for search engines.

The automatic redirect is worth understanding. Renaming a product slug on most platforms silently breaks every link to it. Here the old URL keeps working, so a link from a blog post two years ago still lands.

Meta titles and descriptions

Every product, category and page can override its title and description. Defaults are used where you leave them blank, which is fine for most of the catalog — spend the effort on the pages that matter.

FieldAim for
Meta titleUnder 60 characters, or Google truncates it
Meta descriptionUnder 155 characters. It does not affect ranking, but it decides whether anyone clicks.

The search-result preview shows how a title and description will actually appear before you save them.

The SEO audit

Measured coverage across your catalog: products missing a meta title, a description, body copy, images or alt text. A check that cannot be verified reports unknown rather than claiming a pass.

Work it in this order, because that is the order of impact:

  1. Products with no description at all.
  2. Products with no images, or images with no alt text.
  3. Missing meta titles on your best sellers.
  4. Everything else.

Alt text

Describe what is actually in the photograph, in plain words. It is read aloud to customers using a screen reader, shown when an image fails to load, and read by search engines. "Navy linen shirt on a wooden hanger" — not "IMG_4821" and not "buy shirt online india".

The audit flags products and pages that nothing on your site links to. A page nothing links to is a page search engines struggle to find and customers never stumble across.

Being realistic

SEO is slow. Nothing here produces traffic this week. Do it because in six months you would rather have it done than be starting. If you need customers tomorrow, that is advertising, not SEO.

robots.txt

Editable under Settings. Leave it alone unless you know exactly why you are changing it — a stray Disallow: / removes your entire store from Google, and it takes weeks to come back.
