Discount codes
Percentage, flat, free shipping and conditional rules.
Discount codes are created under Coupons. They can take a percentage or a flat amount off, waive shipping, and be limited to carts that meet conditions you set.
The basics
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Code | What the customer types at checkout. |
| Type | Percentage off, or a flat amount off. |
| Value | The percentage, or the rupee amount. |
| Minimum subtotal | Cart value the code needs to be worth using. |
| Maximum discount | A ceiling on what a percentage code can ever give away. |
| Redemption cap | How many times it can be used in total. |
| Expiry | When it stops working. |
| Free shipping | Waives delivery instead of taking money off the goods. |
Always set a maximum discount on a percentage code. "20% off" is fine on a ₹2,000 order and expensive on a ₹40,000 one. The ceiling is what stops a generous-looking code becoming a loss on your largest baskets.
Conditional rules
A code can require the cart to satisfy conditions:
| Condition | Example use |
|---|---|
| Cart subtotal is between | A code that only applies over ₹2,000 |
| Total item quantity is between | Buy three or more |
| Cart contains a specific product | Push a particular item |
| Cart contains an item from a category | A category-wide sale |
| Cart contains an item priced between | Discount only the premium range |
Combine several with all must match or any can match.
What the discount applies to
Either the whole cart, or only the lines that matched the rule. The second is what you want for "20% off shirts" — otherwise the shirt in the cart discounts the shoes as well.
Checking a code before you publish it
- Build a cart that should qualify and confirm the discount applies.
- Build one that should not and confirm it is refused.
- Check the largest realistic order — is the discount still one you can afford?
Did it work?
Coupon performance in Reports shows how many orders used each code, the discount given and the revenue behind it. Worth reading before repeating a promotion — a code that mostly discounted people who would have bought anyway is a cost, not a campaign.
Housekeeping
- Set an expiry on every promotional code. Codes leak onto voucher sites and live forever.
- Deactivate rather than delete, so past orders stay explainable.
- Avoid guessable codes like
SALE10for anything generous.
